Hi again
I've been out this afternoon M, doing something ‘normal’ and trying to pretend I’m not dealing with anxiety. It has worked a bit, but I’ve come home exhausted. So thanks for your reply - I’ll probably have to read it half a dozen times to get the gist of what you said 😞
I do have a laptop that is quite a few years old now, but someone with tech knowledge did kindly clean it up, and I guess reset it too, sometime last year.
The thing that’s tripped me up though is choosing an anti virus protector and I’ve never got around to doing that. So now here you are - the only person I can ask for help. How do I make this decision. The scammers and hackers etc of this world scare the living daylights out of me, and that combined with needing to be conservative about money makes it SO complicated for me and I am quite overwhelmed by it all.
So I’ve attached a couple of anti-virus pics in the hope you can point me in the right direction.
We all know the sayings “you get nothing for free” and “you get what you pay for” so is AVG any good ?
It says “
AVG FREE ANTI-VIRUS 2024
Official Site - A V G dot com - Stops viruses, spyware, malware and ransomware with six powerful layers of protection. Free Forever - Fast & Easy Antivirus Software. Download AVG Antivirus. Light & easy installation.
I do banking stuff on my iPad and wouldn’t do it on the laptop, but what about my email addresses, passwords, other identifiers etc, and can email addresses on the lap top lead scammers, hackers etc. to my iPad somehow with this FREE A V G dot com ?
SO SO SO many things to be aware of - but I’m like a lost babe in the woods with it all these days, and everything is changing incredibly fast. It scares me
Im so sorry to load you up with all this M, but I only have you to ask.
I couldn’t add the pics this time. I googled virus protectors and got A V G and pcmag, but you know how it is - can you believe anything online ? and the saying “nothing is for free” and “you get what you pay for” - A V G is free, so ….
thank you M 🙏🙏🙏

Hey @Lula ,
I spoke to a tech specialist once who specialises in scams and he said Apple has a lot of safe guards in and it's unlikely people get through.
But that's just what he said.
I've never had issues with people hacking into my apple products.

thanks tyme - as I said in another post lots of things have changed and everything is moving so fast these days it’s about impossible for folks like us to keep up. I’m sure not doing a good job of that.

I used to use Free AVG years ago and it was quite good. But then it started with all the annoying messages about upgrading to the paid version so I got rid of it. I used to use Kaspersky because that was quite good and I could get it quite cheap, but I just use the free one that comes built into Windows now... it does a good enough job.
They are there mainly to protect you from viruses though. Unless you download files from dodgy websites, you should be pretty safe. Most scams now are people phoning you or text messages on your phone.
Email addresses can be used to scam you by basically sending you emails trying to trick you into visiting paying them with any number of different scams. Same os your phone number... you might get a text message saying you owe the ATO money or they owe you money, or you owe money for driving through a toll road. There's lots of them, but most of the try to trick you into thinking they owe you money, or you owe them money.
Basically NEVER give any personal information to anyone that contacts you if you're not 100% sure of who they are and trust them 100%... not matter who they say they are. If they same they are from the government, then thank them, hang up and call whatever department they said they were from and ask if it was real if you have any doubts, but it's highly likely it was a scam. If the government or your bank or anyone like that needs to contact you, they'll generally send you a letter. Never use a number, web address, or email address they give you... look it up yourself. If someone contacts you and offers a service, while trying to convince you that you need it and they're trying to help you, it's most likely a scam.
Basically, if you're unsure... or even pretty sure but it seems like it could possibly be a scam... ask how they are and how to contact them back, then go and ask someone what they think. If they really don't want you asking for someone's opinion or advice, then they're definitely trying to scam you.
As far as passwords, just use strong passwords... 8 letters or more and include numbers, capital and lower case letters, some punctuation and not real words or names. So if your birthday is the 17th or you were born in 1970.... dont have passwords like lula17 or lula70 for example... they can be easy to guess.
I know I've just dumped a lot of information on you, but it's pretty simple...
1) If it seems suspicious it probably is.
2) If you don't know who is contacting you, ask for their details and say you'll contact them back... if they're legitimate, they'll be perfectly happy for you to do that. If they're scammers, they'll try to talk you out of it.
3) If they try to scare or intimidate you into believing them, they're scammers.
4) If they say they owe you money or you own them money, they're scammers. If it was legitimate, you will get a letter in the mail from them.
5) Never give out passwords, personal information of any kind to anyone.
6) If you're still not 100% sure, ask them to send you something in writing through the post. If they refuse. they're scammers.
So just follow these golden rules.
So you're more likely to be scammed from a random phone call, email or text message these days. Any of the free antiviruses are okay, but will likely bug you about upgrading to the paid version. for example, Avast, Avira, AVG. Also the free built in Microsoft Defender/Security. That wont bug you because it doesn't have a paid version. Most of those you should be able to get for the iPad as well, except the Microsoft one... that's Windows only.
I hope that all is a bit helpful for you... it is quite a lot of information but just remember the key points.
And don't worry about asking me, I'm happy to help and it's never a bother for me, so please don't feel that way about asking me.

Thanks for all your advice M about anti-virus options and scammers and hackers. I’ll try to use my laptop in the next few days.
I have my phone blocked to outside numbers now, but before that I was always on the alert and haven’t got caught so far. People I know did get caught though.
What did you think about the tapping ? You might think it’s some wacko thing, but really it’s not. I don’t know why it hasn’t come up in my thinking before but it has been a few years and the space I was in then was very different to now. I’ve been doing the tapping on the side of my hand a bit and also the collar bone and I have felt a shift so I’m encouraged by that. I had a good sleep last night but this morning I have this quite strong feeling of wanting to sleep more, but I can’t as I have to go out for an appointment.
How are you today M ? It’s kinda weird but I have somehow got to feeling quite connected to you and I wish we could really talk. I do like the way you reply in posts and I can almost put a voice to what you say. I hope you don’t mind. I keep forgetting to tick the box “Email me when someone replies” - I’d like that to be at the bottom of the reply option, it would work better for me at least.
I’ve got to go now, bye M

Hi Lula,
Just keep using you iPad for the banking and try the laptop out with this site and see how it goes. No harm done that way and no risks to security.
A lot of people do get done by these scams. there's a reason they start of with something scary, like you owe money or they've detected error on you computer or they detected that you've been hacked! It's all to get you to panic and most people will react and think less clearly and they get you while you're still in a bit of a daze.
I did have a quick go at the tapping while I read about it. It did feel kinda nice. I'm still not sure if it does anything to me, but I've found myself doing it a couple of times while I was just sitting quietly thinking. I didn't even realise I had started doing it.
I must admit, today hasn't been great. I'm just a bit frustrated with a few things I guess and just feeling a bit down as a result. Not too bad, but just feeling some old habits wanting to try to creep back in. So i'm about to go to the gym (I never thought I'd be saying that!) to do some time on the bike to put towards my goal for the month.
I guess, that's the downside of connecting with people here. As great as it is and as helpful as it is, a sit down, chat and a coffee (lime milkshake for me) would be nice as well. But most of us live so far apart anyway so at least we can connect here as much as we want. As long you don't mind reading all my replies... I can go on a bit and they get a bit long 🙂 I'm happy for you to put any voice to them you wish.
To be honest, i've never ticked that box and I get emails when someone replies... it seems to be the default option. I'm assuming that box is there in case you've turned that default option off but you want to get an email about any replies to a particular post. So you should get emails whenever someone replies to you (assuming they tag you) whether you tick that box or not.
Bye for not. Take care and I hope you're doing okay today Lula.

Thanks @tyme, I didn't see it.
Thanks @Lula. I'm pretty good today. I saw my new psychologist this morning and it was quite good. So I feel like he's a much better fit for me. It's just more expensive because I don't have any mental health care plan visits left... 4 times the price 😞 But I see him again in a month... I'm spreading them out. I hope you are doing okay as well. Are you still having any of those issues with the site?
