Re: Aboriginal Learnings

@Former-Member. Hi.
Last year I started going up to a mountain near where I live to meditate. I kept getting this strong urge to go to a granite slab part way down the mountain - that I could see from the top.
I go there on day. I walk around this granite slab - I think its about an acre in size. I meditate and then start heading back to my car. I'm walking back a different way, keeping an eye out for snakes (not a fan). When I notice a place that could hide snakes. So I walked around it, all the while keeping a sharp eye on it.
All of a sudden I knew what I was looking at. Even though I'd never seen one before, I just new it was an Aboriginal Water Well. That's the one in the bottom picture with the granite lid intact.
I had a friend come and investigate the site a while later. They were confirmed as Aboriginal Water Wells. We have now had all 3 of them added to the Heritage Database.
Since then, I've found out that this site is a womans ceremony / sacred site. It was used by a local tribe that died out shortly after white settlement. Luckily there are still descendants of the 5 remaining tribes of this group. Slowly I am learning more and more about the history of my communities Aboriginal history.
And I'm hooked on learning more and more.
Once summer is properly over, there are a few sites up in the mountains that I would like to investigate. I feel there is far more to be found.

Hi Everyone. I heard last year about some Aboriginal Rock Art in my local Mountains. Unfortunately, noone who has seen it, was able to tell me of it's location or anything about the site - as it is now being managed by the Local Aboriginal Organisation. So all I'd seen was an image of part of the art.

Last night, I decided to try Googling it again. Success!!!  There was a report written. So I read through the whole thing until 5am. I couldn't go to sleep without reading it all and looking through the photo's and details of the images.

Wow. Learnt heaps. Have more questions now than before.

4 different colours of ocha were used. The report did not test where these pigments came from.

3 different date ages of the Art. But they do not and have not dated the Art work. They just determined this by the images and the fading.

There is more Rock Art close by as well. Although no photographs or sketches of these in the report. The report also states they believe due to similar instilations in other areas of Victoria, that there must be more Rock Art in my Mountains. WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW.

I'm pumped. Tomorow the weather is going to be cooler than it has been. So I'm going to put on my red Doc Martens and head bush. (staying close to the main tracks). I can't go to the site of this known Rock Art, because it is in an extremely isolated area, and I cannot gain acces through private property (yet). But I'll still go and have a look around other areas of my Mountain.

I'm so excited!!!!!!

Re: Aboriginal Learnings

WOW That is exciting @utopia - I hope you take pictures, I'd love to see them! I found some little caves this afternoon on my walk with the dogs, I was actually just following a fenceline - I thought it was odd, . . . a fence in the state forest, but they're quarrying something in there. I couldn't actually get up to them, they're on the other side of the fence - plus I was worried my young dog would just barge in around them and some of those caverns?(don't know if that's the right word, they're only small) can be pretty unstable. I'll look forward to hearing about your walk tomorrow 🙂 Thanks for tagging me Heart

Re: Aboriginal Learnings

@Former-Member The main Art and the other 3 smaller ones are not in caves, but in rock overhangs.

Wow, you are going to have to go back and explore your cave. Maybe have a short lead on the dog or not take her next time. And you should take photos too. Be sure to look for any black soot marks on the walls, roof. Evidence of fires.

I'll take photos if I find anything interesting.

Re: Aboriginal Learnings

Fantastic @utopia

At our zoo there are a lot of significant sites for indigenous tribes as 3 tribes often met and bartered there.

It is great that a little of koori history, culture and research is coming to light.

Re: Aboriginal Learnings

@utopia, so happy and proud for you. Hope you made it to your mountain today.

The red Doc's sound cool, but would have be purple for me.

May be you could put the link to the website you were reading for others to read. Hope you had a great day.

Re: Aboriginal Learnings

@Heart. If the report didn't show the exact location of the Rock Art and my town - then I would post it. But I can't. Besides that - the report cannot be reproduced - due to copyright. I had to buy the report.
Didn't get to the mountains today.
